Hens lay based on day length, which means the shorter days of winter naturally signal them to stop laying and begin their annual moult. As a farmer, you can choose whether to let your hens naturally moult and rest during this season, or add a lighting kit to increase the daylight hours and maintain steady egg production.
If you choose to use a lighting kit, you will find it most effective in the southern half of Australia where winter days are much shorter. While you might not see a significant change in production in the middle of summer or in the northern parts of Australia where days are already long, farms located south of Brisbane typically experience an increase in production throughout the Autumn and Winter months when lighting is added.
